About the Learning Enhancement Checklist (LEC) assessment

  • The Learning Enhancement Checklist (LEC) assessment is a computerised, diagnostic tool which identifies barriers to academic success and serves as an early warning intervention strategy
  • It is an independent self-screening measure used to unpack self-reported problems into identifiable indicators.
  • Its aims are to promote student empowerment through self-awareness, increased self-responsibility and self-efficacy for academic success.
  • It increases retention and throughput and it offers College support for at risk students (this is part of the College's academic monitoring system's policy)

Who should attend a Learning Enhancement Checklist (LEC) assessment session?

  • It is compulsory for all at risk AES students to do the LEC assessment unless you can produce proof that you have done the assessment previously (in which case you need to make an appointment to see a student counsellor individually).
  • Once you have completed the LEC, you will be allocated to a feedback group and then have your at risk letter stamped and signed off and you will then be able to continue with the registration process.

  • You are required to produce your at risk letter at the LEC session. A copy of the completed and stamped letter must be submitted to the College Academic Services Staff immediately after your LEC session and after you have attended an academic and curriculum advice session to release the hold and allow you to continue with registration.
  • Note: You may not do the LEC assessment online by yourself as you do not have the required information to complete this correctly.

How to book an LEC assessment session
  • The book is done online using lec.cs.ukzn.ac.za (this system)
  • To book a session, login using your student number and date of birth in the format (day month year). You can then book an available session.
  • Several sessions are available for you to select from. Each session is 1.5 hours long. Please make sure you select an appropriate date and time as several sessions may be held each day. Each session has a limited capacity so you are advised to book early.
  • Once you have made a booking, take note of the time and venue details and make yourself available at the correct time and place.
